Sound Healing for Beginners: What to Expect at Your First Session

If you've never been to a sound healing session, you probably have questions. What actually happens? Will I feel anything? Do I have to meditate? What if I fall asleep? What if I don't feel anything?

This guide answers all of them — honestly, without the spiritual fluff.

Before You Arrive

What to wear: Comfortable, loose clothing. Layers are useful — the body temperature drops when you're deeply relaxed, and you may feel cold even on a warm day. Socks are recommended.

What to bring: Nothing is required. Some people bring an eye mask. A small blanket or additional layer is welcome.

What to eat: Don't arrive on a full stomach. A light meal 2–3 hours before is ideal. Stay hydrated, but don't overdrink immediately before.

What not to do: Avoid caffeine in the hours before your session. It counteracts the parasympathetic response the sound is designed to create.

Arriving at the Session

Most sound healing sessions begin with a short check-in — a practitioner asking how you're feeling and if there's anything specific you'd like to focus on. This is not a therapy intake. It's just context.

You'll then set up your space. In a typical sound bath, participants lie on yoga mats or massage tables, covered with a light blanket. The room is usually dim. Some practitioners use essential oils or gentle incense — if you have sensitivities, mention this beforehand.

During the Session

Once you're settled, the practitioner begins playing. In a TERRASTRA session, this typically means Tibetan singing bowls are placed around and near the body, with crystal bowls and handpan added throughout.

You don't need to do anything specific. No breathing technique is required. No meditation instruction. You simply lie there and let the sound arrive.

Some common experiences during a session:

  • Physical sensation: Vibration felt in the chest, stomach, or limbs. This is normal and usually pleasant.
  • Emotional release: Tears, laughter, or unexpected emotions surfacing. This is not unusual — sound can access emotional material stored in the body.
  • Deep relaxation or sleep: Many people fall asleep. This is completely fine and counts as a full session.
  • Visions or imagery: Some people experience visual patterns or dream-like imagery with eyes closed.
  • Nothing in particular: Also completely normal. Your nervous system is still responding even if you don't consciously notice anything.

What Not to Worry About

"What if I fall asleep?" — This is one of the best outcomes. You'll wake up feeling deeply rested.

"What if I feel nothing?" — Your nervous system is responding regardless of what you consciously feel. Many people who "feel nothing" during a session notice significant changes in sleep, stress levels, or mood in the following 24–48 hours.

"What if I start crying?" — Let it happen. It means something released. This is the point.

"What if I need to leave early?" — You can always quietly leave. There's no obligation to stay.

After the Session

The period immediately after a session is important. Your nervous system is in a deeply receptive state.

We recommend:

  • Sitting quietly for 5–10 minutes before getting up quickly
  • Drinking water
  • Avoiding screens and loud environments for at least 30 minutes
  • Noticing what you feel in your body — changes in temperature, weight, clarity

Some people feel immediate shifts. Others notice effects in their sleep quality or emotional state over the following days.
